The League
David Harris
Bantam, 1986

The behind-the-scenes power battles within the NFL periodically become public, most notably during debates over franchise movements. David Harris’s book examined how the power structure of the NFL had changed between the late 1970s and the early 1980s, when the conflict between Raiders owner Al Davis and NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle boiled over and the Raiders moved to Los Angeles. Harris also explored the way teams manipulate politicians to get funding for stadiums, how the players’ union failed its members and the threat of gambling scandals.
